Doctoral training in the molecular biosciences frequently fails to prepare students for academic and alternate careers. The grounded theory advanced in this learning extends the literature on doctoral education related to student experiences that foster the development of knowledge transfer skills. Optimistically, these insights may be a resource for academic leaders as they reflect on the development of new programs and the re-development of existing ones; to students and current graduates as they select programs and become leaders in their field (academic and otherwise); and to mentors, who have a large role in the development of doctoral students.

Research conducted for this dissertation has led to the development of theory related to elements of the doctoral practice that foster the development of knowledge transfer skills in the molecular biosciences. In asking what ways the experiences of students in PhD programs in the molecular biosciences foster knowledge transfer, I was able to prepare a framework for understanding student experiences in the context of their doctoral programs. Students' experiences are affected by many different elements of doctoral education. As they prepare identities as researchers and scientists, and transition from novices to experts, students' experiences are shaped by their mentors, peers, programs and departments. Positioned subjects spoke about their experiences in interviews, importance the need for explicit discussion about expectations from all stakeholders. This study exposed a need to balance support and challenge for doctoral students to allow them to prepare the capacity to perform high-level scientific research and act as leaders in their fields. The development of knowledge transfer skills within this background is important preparation for students in the molecular biosciences. Doctoral students in this area require to apply their content-specific expertise in increasingly broad ways provided the diverse career pathways that they will take and the way in which disciplinary boundaries in the sciences are blurring.
