The maintenance of water bound macadam surface consists of :

filling potholes, ruts with additional material and adequately compacting.
removing corrugations by dragging.
repairing lavelled surface (in which loose aggregates appear on the road) by adding fresh binding material, watering and compacting.
restoring broken edges by fresh material.
renewal of surface (50-75 mm) once in 2-6 years depending upon traffic.
