Logic families and lsi devices, C/C++ Programming

Assignment Help:

We have used logic symbols in the past, but not really though about the actual real devices. Semiconductor companies have taken the logic symbols are manufactured them into logic families. The main logic families are TTL and CMOS with variants for speed and low power. The TTL family use 'Bipolar technology' which means higher current, fixed supply rails +5V, but are not sensitive to 'Electro-static'. These devices are recognised by the number 74 i.e. 7400 etc. Other variants exist 74LS, 74F, 74HC etc. The second family uses MOSFET technology and hence low power, variable supply rails 3V -> 18V, sensitive to 'Electro Static'. These devices are recognised by the number 40 i.e. 4000 etc. Other variants are available B and UB series etc.

Below is shown the packaging of a quad 4 input NAND gate, it is important to realise that the package has 4 devices inside and requires power supply.

An actual picture of a TTL device is shown below. Pin 1 is indicated by a 'circle' on the face of the device.
