LASER SURFACE TREATMENT APPLICATIONS

The laser can be used to alter the surface structure of materials either with or without alloying additions as compared to alloying by any other fusion welding or other surface modification technique. Without alloying additions, the processes include:

  • a) Transformation hardening: without surface melting.
  • b) Surface melting: producing homogenisation and rapid solidification structures.
  • c) Glazing: fast quench on certain alloys causes solidification of glass structure.
