Trim tabs are small flaps attached to the rear of the main control surfaces. They can be adjusted the pilot to reduce the force required to hold the control surface in its deflected position. It shows the port elevator trim tab on the Short Brothers SB5, an historic research aircraft that was us to test different wing and tail configurations during the development of the English Electric Lightning
