Ethnicity is a strong surrogate for this gene-environment interaction and may underlie the propensity to develop obesity and CVD due to natural selection of the 'thrifty' gene. Genetic predisposition may also be related to the Lipoprotein a (Lp-a), an atherogenic lipid fraction whose level is geneticallyDetermined and is found to be higher in Indians.
