Explain the Steps for Injecting Insulin Injection

It is important to teach patient to take injections at regular times, 30 to 60 minutes before meals. Take insulin everyday, even when ill.

1. Give comfortable position to the patient.

2. Maintain privacy.

3. Choose the injection site.

4. Clean the site with the swab. First at the center of the site and rotate outward in circular direction for about 2 inches.

5. Hold swab between third and fourth fingers of left hand if you are a right handed person.

6. Remove needle cap from needle by pulling straight off.

7. Hold syringe between thumb and forefinger of right hand like a pencil.

8. Pinch skin and fat between your thumb and first finger.

9. With your other hand, hold the syringe at a 90 degree angle (45 degree angle for children or thin people). Pinch the skin.

10. Push the needle ay 45 to 90 degree angle into the subcutaneous tissue under the skin.
