Explain the Composition of Bile

Bile is a complex fluid. It is yellowish green in colour and bitter in taste. It consists of:

  • Water
  • Mineral salts (chloride, potassium and calcium, carbonate and phosphate of sodium)
  • Mucus
  • Bile salts (sodium glycocholate, sodium taurocholate)
  • Bile pigments (bilirubin and biliverdin)
  • Cholesterol, and
  • Traces  of  fatty acids
