Explain the chemical properties of insulating materials, Electrical Engineering

Assignment Help:

Explain the chemical properties of insulating materials.

Chemical properties-

Chemical resistance: Presence of gases, acids, water, alkalies and salts influences different insulators in a different way. Chemically a material is a better insulator if this resists chemical action.

Hygroscopicity: Several insulators come in contact with the atmosphere throughout manufacture or operation or both. Moisture influences the electrical properties of the insulator.

Effect of contact with other materials: Insulation remains in contact with various types of materials as air, moisture, gases, structural materials and conducting materials. It can adversely influence the insulating properties.

Ageing: Ageing is the long time effect of heat, chemical action, and voltage application. These factors decide the natural life of an insulator.
