Linked list allocation using index

The blocks don't have a fixed size. Pointers are utilized to point to the next block in a file. The pointers are set aside as a separate table in the main memory. Therefore traversal is made easier since we need not go to the hard disk each time a block needs to be accessed.

Consider a file with these blocks 4K, 2K, 10K, 1K

The table for the file pointers can be symbolized as follows:
