Q. Explain about Quarter Inch Cartridge Tapes?

Quarter Inch Cartridge Tapes (QIC Standard): These tape cartridges record information sequentially in a track with one head. When end of the tape is reached tape is rewound and data is recorder on subsequent track. There are 9 to 30 tracks. Data bits are serial on a track and blocks of approximately 6000 bytes are written followed by error-correction code to allow correction of data on reading if any error takes place. Density of data is around 16000 bits per inch in modern tapes. Tapes store around 500 MB. Cassette size is 5.25 inch just like a floppy and mounted in a slot provided on front panel of a computer. Tape R/W speed is around 120 inch/second and data are transferred at the speed of 240KB/s.

These tapes are generally interfaced to a computer employing the SCSI standard. Data formats used in these tapes are known as QIC standard.
