Lifting the water surface
Bend the pointed end of a pin or use a piece of fine wire to make a hook. File the point of the hook unless it is very sharp. Put your eye on a level with the surface of the water in a drinking glass. Put the hook under the surface of the water and gently increase the point to the surface. If you are cautious the point will not penetrate the surface film but will lift it slightly upwards.
