Effect of substituent on acidic nature

(a) An electron withdrawing substituent that is - I effect stabilizes the anion by dispersing the negative charge and hence increases the acidity.

(b) An electron releasing substituent that + I effect stabilizes negative charge on the anion resulting in the decrease of stability and so decreased the acidity of acid.
