However what if you don't know about the IP address of the computer you wished to connect to? What if you have to access a web server referred to as www.abc.com? How does your web browser know where this computer lives on the Internet? The answer to all of  these questions is the Domain Name Service or DNS. It is a distributed database, which keeps track of computer's names & their corresponding IP addresses on the Internet.
