"wiring-up" of our brain begins in early development. When our genetic blueprint largely drives this wiring in womb, a newborn baby's brain sponges up new information from its environment and quickly sprouts billions of nerve cell connections ("synapses") in response, ultimately pruning some of them. New findings reveal that brain undergoes a second wave of dramatic synapse growth during adolescence which is followed by another round of pruning to strengthen synapses which are used routinely and eliminate those that aren't.
