You have been asked to help on the design of CDU's new electric vehicle. The vehicle is to be powered by a 96V, 300A battery pack and you need to decide on the maximum length you can run the 50mm2 cable that is to be used to wire the battery pack to the controller.
(i) After looking up AS-3000 you find that the cable must not have a voltage drop of more than 5% across it at maximum current (in this case 300A). If the resistivity (ρ) of the cable to be used is 4x10-7 Ohm-meters, what is the maximum length for this cable? Show all calculations.
(ii) After making your calculation, you realise that you actually need a piece of wire twice as long as your calculation permits. Suggest, showing all working out, how you might be able to achieve the required length. The resistivity of any cable used must remain the same (4x10-7 Ohm-meters).
