Determine equilibrium constants for acid and base, Chemistry

Assignment Help:

Q. Determine Equilibrium Constants for Acid and base?

Ans.

The pH scale of acidity is a simple and convenient way to state the acidity of a solution.

  • The pH of acid solutions is less than 7.0.
  • The pH of basic solutions is greater than 7.0.
  • The pH of a neutral solution (for example, pure water) is equal to 7.0.

The pH of a solution is calculated from the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution:

pH = -log [H+]

For example, if the concentration of H+ is 1 x 10-3 M, the pH is -log(1x10-3) = 3.
