Question

In designing of service reservoirs, straight reinforcement in walls of reservoirs is placed at external layer. Give some specific and main reasons?

Answer

As service reservoirs are designed as water-retaining structures with stringent condition of crack width control, design of reinforcement of service reservoirs is under control of serviceability boundary state. For walls of service reservoirs, contraction and development of concrete are extra significant in horizontal direction of walls since of their relatively long lengths as compared with heights. In association, in order to diminish usage of reinforcement, horizontal bars are placed at furthest layer so that distance of reinforcement bars to concrete surface is condensed.

As shorter is the distance to point of concern, smaller is crack width and therefore with such reinforcement agreement recompense are taken if the reinforcement bars in significant direction are placed neighbouring to concrete surface.
