The colonies that became the United States were more democratic in the earliest founding during the 17th century up until the 1820s. More equality prevailed in 1st several generations of colonization and fewer distinctions between the rich and the poor to create major class divisions. All could vote in the New England town meeting and anyone could stand for election to the House of Burgesses in Virginia. The Constitution written in 1787 actually closed down this early and thriving democracy, creating a government distant from popular control run by elites. But eventually American voters figured out how to get the power back, as is easily seen in the election of 1828. That's when the United States truly acquired a democratic government, where the people had direct control of their government."
