Describe the differences among short-term, medium-term, and long-term scheduling.
Short-term (CPU scheduler)-selects from jobs in memory those jobs that are ready to execute and allocates the CPU to them.
Medium-term- used especially with time-sharing systems as an intermediate scheduling level. A swapping scheme is implemented to remove partially run programs from memory and reinstate them later to continue where they left off.
Long-term (job scheduler)-verifies which jobs are brought into memory for processing.
SSTF (Shortest Seek Time First) After a demand go to the closest request in the work queue regardless of direction Decrease total seek time compared to FCFS Disadv
Q. What are the five main activities of an operating system in regard to process management? Answer: a. The creation as well as deletion of both user and system processes
Hashed page tables A common approach for handling address spaces larger than 32 bits is to use a hashed page table. Every entry in the hash table having a linked list of elemen
Explain the Advantages and Drawback of Multiple Processes Application architected to take advantage of multiple processes will certainly see performance gains. Functions and Fe
Worst Fit Algorithm Here we obtain the largest space available for the smallest. Therefore after that process entered there will be much more space remaining. In this space we
Define deadlock. A process requests resources; if the resources are not available at that time, the process enters a wait state. Waiting processes might be never again change s
What is a binary Semaphore?
The scheduling technique in which CPU is allocated to the process with least CPU-burst time is known as Shortest job first Scheduling is a scheduling technique in which CPU i
Explain FIFO page replacement A FIFO replacement algorithm associates with every page the time when that page was brought into memory. When a page must be changed, the oldest p
What do you mean by system calls? System calls give the interface among a process and the operating system. When a system call is implemented, it is treated as by the hardware
