The drive of this study was to investigate how student employment donates to college students achieving educational outcomes during their college careers. The research questions that were addressed were- What student employment factors definitely enhance college student learning? What student employment aspects deter college student learning?

An interpretivist method was chosen, whereby sense was open to negotiation. Study participants as well as the interviewer engaged in reflective processes through semi-structured interviews. Students who had functioned on-campus at least 10 hours per week during four semesters as a student at UW-Stevens Point served as the primary data source.

A multi-case study design was working that incorporated grounded theory and the constant comparative method to guide data collection, analysis and theory development. Three data collection components were combined in the study, including the UWSP Senior Survey, in-depth interviews and demographic survey. Data from the surveys also interviews were continually and systematically compared to discern patterns of similarity or difference between and within cases. Interpretations, questions as well as findings were shared with interviewees for reciprocal meaning and clarification and discussion.

Results were allied with the research questions as well as generated eight themes about the positive factors which improved college student employment learning as well as five themes that deter college student employment learning. Two deductions drawn from the demographic data of the study were- 1) females had inferior self-reported levels of learning than did male participants and 2) students who were involved in the on-campus work study program had lower levels of self-reported learning than did individuals who held regular paid positions or a combination of regular paid positions as well as work-study positions. Additionally the results of the study led to the formulation of a theoretical model regarding the developmental requirements of college student employees. The study accomplishes with implications for student affairs practitioners as well as suggestions for future research.

It is my hope that this study would inspire staff, students, faculty and student employment administrators to involve in on-going conversations about the nature as well as scope of on-campus College student employment positions. This would comprise discussions about how student employees are trained, how student employment positions are developed and how student employment jobs are structured and evaluated.
