Compressive Stress:

The stress induced in a body, when subjected to two equal and opposite pushes as shown in figure (a)

as a result of which there is an decrease in length, is known as tensile stress.

Assume that, an axial push P is acting on body of cross sectional area A. Then compressive stress( σ c)  can be given by;

σc= Resisting force (R)/Cross sectional area (A)

σc= P/A N/m2.
