Ascertainment Bias

A possible form of the bias, mainly in retrospective studies, which arises from a relationship amongst the exposure to the risk factor and the probability of detecting the event of interest. In a study comparing women by means of cervical cancer and a control group, for instance, an excess of oral contraceptive use among the cases might possibly be due to more regular screening for disease prevailing among the women are known to be taking the pill.
