A field trip to a rock quarry

The quarry should be visited by the teacher in advance. View how the rock is removed. If the rock is sedimentary, view the layers. Collect rock samples to take back to the classroom for study. Look for fossils of any plants or animals. A field trip might also be planned to an exposed rock cut or ledge and to a coal mine if there is any nearby.
