α -elimination reactions or 1,1-elimination reactions:

A reaction where both the groups or atoms are removed from similar carbon of the molecule is called α - elimination reaction. This reaction is generally provided by gem dihalides and gem trihalides comprising at least one α - hydrogen.

Product of the reaction is halocarbenes or dihalocarbenes. That is main intermediates in a entire variety of chemical and photochemical reactions.
