Dimensions & Applications: Introduction & Concept

Dimensions and Units were developed in order to answer all scientific inquiries into a universally intelligible format, that is, more commonly accepted languages .We know that the analysis of various problems by the method of dimensions is very famous and has a vital role in teaching, since a clear understanding is required for a successful application which is being studied. The field of atomic physics and its application seem to have been meager. This is unfortunate since not only are various expressions commonly derived by detailed analysis seemed to be dimensionally essential but also comparison is readily offered between quanta and classical. In any system of measurement like the metric system, there are certain quantities which are considered as fundamentals, and all others are considered to be derived from those only. Systems in which length (denoted as L), time (denoted as T), and mass (denoted as M) are taken as fundamental quantities are called absolute systems. In physics the dimension of an object or space is informally defined as the minimum number of coordinates that is needed to specify each point within it. Therefore a line has a dimension of one because only we can specify a point on it by using one coordinate only. A surface such as the surface of a cylinder or a plane or sphere has a dimension of two because you need two coordinates to specify a point on it ,for example, if you want to locate a point on the surface of a sphere you need both its latitude and its longitude. If you consider the inside of a cube, a cylinder or a sphere, it is three-dimensional because here you need three co-ordinates to locate a point within these spaces. In Classical physics there are three physical dimensions namely up/down, left/right, and forward/backward. And any other directions excluding above mentioned ones can be realized from those only. Dimension of time is known as temporal dimension which is often referred as the ‘fourth dimension’. But it is not a spatial dimension. It is used to measure physical change. Einstein's special relativity is the best known example of time as dimension.
