Dr. Belson was interested in studying how expectations can influence psychologists’ evaluations of clients. Some psychologists were randomly assigned to two groups. Each group was shown the same videotape of a person being interviewed by the experimenter. For one group the person being interviewed was described as a job applicant. For the other group the person being interviewed was described as a patient. All the psychologists’ responded to a ten-item questionnaire in which they rated the person on symptoms of psychological disorder. Results showed that the psychologists rated the person as having more symptoms of disorder when they had been told that he was a patient.
