Question

Wyverns are two legged dragons. There is one population of wyverns that lives in caves, while all other wyvern populations are surface dwelling (i.e., don't live in caves). Cave dwelling wyverns are wingless and surface dwelling wyverns have wings.

You are studying WFLAP, a protein known to be involved in wing formation and find that cave dwelling dragons produce significantly less WFLAP than surface dwelling dragons. However, there are no genetic differences in the coding sequence of the WFLAP gene between cave and surface dwelling dragons. Compared to surface dwelling dragons, how could cave dwelling dragons have lower amounts of WFLAP with no changes to the WFLAP gene?
