My experience with working in the hospital is that I interact with people of all ages, whether it be the patient or family members. Our patients range from ages 18 to as old as 100 and their family are of all ages, so I communicate with most of the age groups mentioned in the lecture. One general tip to communicate with all age groups is to have a friendly face while talking to them. I do have more experience with the elderly age group from also working in the nursing home. It can be tough to communicate with the elderly for many reasons. One reason could be that they have dementia so they have memory loss issues and it can be hard to be able to hold a conversation or they try to get out of bed over and over. How I handle this situation is that I am a patient and try to redirect them to another activity. Another reason that can be a tough to communicate with the elderly is they may not be able to verbally communicate due to having a stroke. At the hospital we have white boards and markers so they can communicate with us by writing out what they are trying to say, and we also have packets with pictures so that if they are unable to write they can point out what they are trying to tell us.
