For definitions in general:
1. Find examples of the word in use. Examine how the word functions in the examples that you find.
2. Explore the word. What other words seem similar? What words are close? What is the difference between this word and other related words? What distinguishes "fragile" from "weak" from "flimsy"?
3. Think of synonyms (words that mean the same) and antonyms (words that mean the opposite) for the word. Some of these can go into the definition, if they are appropriate.
4. Describe the word. While it's all right to include synonyms in the definition, a definition cannot be composed entirely of synonyms, so try to be as descriptive as possible. If the word has a range of meanings, you'll need to address each one separately.
5. Write the definition in the typical style of a dictionary. Phrases such as "This word is used to..." or "Describes a situation in which..." may help to get you started but edit them out later. Also see the model answer.
6. As always, read aloud to edit. Check for clarity, simplicity and flow as well as accuracy.
For this assignment:
1. One of the criteria is to identify sources for your definition, so show that you have incorporated theological sources. A good answer will include Scripture, some traditional/church thoughts (Early church? Catholic? Reformer? Modern? Postmodern?), good explanation and research (reason), and personal experience/application of the concept. The model answer is a little heavy on the latter, so try and have a little of each.
2. Make sure that you do your research so that the definition is accurate and balanced (a more general definition than your own personal or church's opinion).
3. Make sure your work is well-written. Check your capital letters usage. Read aloud. Check formatting with "Guideline to Written Assignments". Make your work a 'jewel' by polishing it.
4. Make sure that you have used at least two other scholarly works for your definition. These can include:
a. Theological dictionaries.
b. Bible dictionaries.
c. Reputable scholars' thoughts.
d. (Some) of your lecture notes.
5. For your research please don't rely on:
a. Only the Bible (while it should be used, it is not an academic source here).
b. Unattributed websites or websites with a particular denominational or theological bias. The aim is quality and balance.
