RE: Blog Entries
One topic that I have been introduced to when I was initially a sustainability major is the clash between business motives and environmental safety. One of the most interesting examples per-tained to the Chesapeake Bay area in the state of Virginia. Around the bay, a large portion of revenue is gained from tourism. Some of the attractions in this area include seafood restaurants, water activities (boating, wake boarding, jet skis, etc.), as well as camping and other recreational opportunities.
The problem arises when businesses such as the fishing market interrupt the ecological stability of fish in the area. On one hand, fishing and fish markets contribute to a significant chunk of the local economy, producing hundreds of jobs and driving business success. On the contrary, overfishing could very easily lead to the endangerment and even the extinction of several fish species, leaving the economy in an eventual shamble.
On top of this, boating and other activities that use fossil fuels pollutes many of these ecosys-tems, predominantly in these water areas. This leads to various problems especially eutrophica-tion, which by producing excessive greenery on the surface of water prevents biological growth of animal and plant species at the bottom of these water sources.
We cannot simply endanger the Chesapeake economy, but we also cannot endanger these ecosystems. Ultimately both would lead to a disaster. What are some possible solutions? Could we balance these two necessities?
3. The palm oil story highlights an important and challenging dilemma: often when developed countries start limiting imports from a particular region or country because of sustainability con-cerns, they take away local jobs from that area. How can you reconcile this conflict?
4. When you look at the products and business sectors with the biggest impacts, what do you think are the implications for individual businesses and/or society? What surprised you? Does that change your attitude about any products or services?
