Problem: Literacy Narratives
Write an essay reflecting upon the role of literacy in your life and your experience of the world. For this essay, you will want to describe to your readers how your experience of reading and writing has informed your knowledge of the world, and how your experience of the world has informed - or determined - your reading and writing experiences.
To focus this very broad topic, reflect on one particular reading or writing experience: a book, a poem, a play, a class writing assignment (e.g., your experience writing a research essay on WWII for a history class, or writing a short story or poem for English class), etc. Explain what that reading or writing experience meant to you at the time, and explain how you think it has affected any aspect of your life: academic, professional, or personal. Then, describe the circumstances or conditions of the experience: did you write an essay or read a book as a class assignment, did a friend or family member recommend a book, did you randomly find a book at the library, etc.? Note the conditions making possible your experience of writing and/or reading.
Next, consider what your experience of reading or writing has taught you about your world, either in its smaller dimensions (your family or your town) or in its larger dimensions (the country you live in and/or its relationship to other countries). In what ways would your knowledge of the world be different if you had not read that particular book or play, written that short story, or written that research paper?
Finally, describe to your reader what you consider to be the value of written literacy. Do you view effective writing as a means to an end, e.g., to write professionally and get a job? Does writing mean also a way for you to communicate your ideas to others - the general public, friends, family, etc.? Or does writing provide you with a way to better understand aspects of your world? Explain how.
