Assignment - Incompatibility Between Technology and Free Will Discussion
Rhetoric-In-Practice Prompt - The assignment involves two tasks:
1. A Project where you invent a rhetorical situation, research it carefully, find model texts in your chosen genre, and create a text to execute your goals;
2. An Essay where you analyze the rhetorical choices you made in your project, in order to argue for their suitability to your purposes.
Project - You will invent a specific rhetorical situation and produce a text that is appropriate for that situation and relevant to the course theme. During this process, you will select a purpose you want to achieve, an audience you want to address, and a context you want to work within. You will also choose a suitable genre for this rhetorical situation and explore its conventions so that you know them well. In order to inform yourself about your rhetorical situation, you will read sources critically to learn about rhetorical context, which mayinclude social, economic, historical, and / or political matters.
Your genre must be text-based. Fictional narratives are allowed but must operate within a genre with clearly articulable conventions. There can be multi-modal components to the project, but a significant body of text should be the primary component. Discuss with your instructor if he or she has other limitations.
Essay - You will write a rhetorical analysis of your project that demonstrates the clarity and complexity of your rhetorical situation and analyzes the rhetorical choices you've made in executing the project. This should include an examination of the stylistic choices you made in composing the language, visuals, sound, and any other design elements of the project. You'll integrate secondary sources that demonstrate that the rhetorical choices you've made are suitable and deliberate, and that the conception and execution of your project are based on strong research.
Please review the WR39B chapter in The Anteater's Guide to Writing for additional tips and guidelines.
Requirements - The RIP project's length depends on the purpose, audience and genre, but it should be equal to your Rhetorical Analysis in substance and complexity, and should contain at least 1000 words of written text.
The RIP essay should be at least 1000 words long. A minimum of three (3) sources must be cited in the essay.
Multiple drafts, peer review, and revision are required elements of the assignment.
