Percutaneous Test

This test is known as a scratch or prick test which is usually performed on the back or the arms of the patient. The skin is then number into rows which are usually 2 inches apart. Around 50 allergens can be used in one session. A scratch is then made on the skin and the allergen is placed into the scratch.

If an allergy is present it usually happens within the first 30 minutes and a wheal will develop near the area that it was administered. The provider will then evaluate the results and measure the diameter of the site in millimeters. After the examination, if any of the areas present a number 4 reaction then it needs to be wiped off.

Patch Test

This test is done to detect dermatitis. This test is applied with patches usually around 20-29 that have allergens placed on them. Usually they are left on until the provider determines when they need to be taken off. It is important that the medical assistant advises the patient to not bath or participate in activates that will make the patient sweat. The patient is then asked to come back to the office per physician’s order to examine the areas.

Intradermal Test

Typically one allergen dose (0.1 ml) is injected into the patient’s forearm into which it creates a bleb. The patient is then observed for 30 minutes to evaluate if there are reactions from the allergen administered. This test can present false positive results.

When doing allergy testing, it is important that an emergency cart is in place when doing a session, if an anaphylaxis reaction does occur, these steps need to be followed:

• Inform your physician immediately

• Ask the patient to lie down

• Have medications ready to administer ( epinephrine, Benadryl, corticosteroid injections)

• Be sure to check the PT vital signs
