Foundations of Research Inquiry Assignment -
Task Description: Researching health and social issues is extremely important to our work. Effective research means we can bring about change for our clients at a much wider level than our daily practice often allows. The findings, results, and conclusions can lead to practical recommendations for practitioners, policy-makers, and the community. It can result in genuine changes at an individual, community, organisational and policy level. It therefore provides practitioners with great opportunities to make a wide-ranging difference. However, to conduct research, we need to have a good grasp of research methods and start by writing a proposal. The skills you develop through this process will be directly transferable to practice. For those of you who are undertaking a dissertation or research project within your degree, this proposal may also be used as a basis for that study.
To develop your skills in research, this assessment requires you to write a research proposal for a small-scale study (i.e. one that can be completed within 6 to 12 months) on your topic of choice (but in your field of study), covering the following points:
- Project title
- Background (incorporating a concise literature review)
- Research questions / Study aims
- Significance and innovation of the proposed study
- Expected outcomes / Hypotheses
- Research plan: Methodology (including sampling, data collection, and data analysis)
- Ethical considerations
- Study limitations
- Study administration (including budget & timetable
Note: Permission must be sought from the course convenor if you wish to: (i) write a proposal for a replication study, (ii) write a proposal for a study that does not involve data collection with humans (e.g. a systematic review), or (iii) change your topic between assignments, or (iv) write a proposal for a large scale study that would take longer than twelve months.
Develop a research topic into a feasible, relevant study. This is because it is extremely difficult to develop a well- thought, plausible research proposal without discussion with others about it. Consequently, it is recommended you:
1. Post your research proposal question online in no more than 100 words to the course discussion board during weeks 6 and 7 (also include your data collection methods if known at that time).
2. Provide constructive feedback between 50 to 80 words (approx) to others on the discussion board during week 8 and at the same time respond to any feedback given to you.
