Assignment -
Write a research paper exploring a public health challenge, using public health approaches.
What makes something a public health issue or challenge?
- It affects the health of A LOT of people
- It is PREVENTABLE - whether through community action, social environment, technological innovation, or some other WIDESPREAD change
Writing Your Paper - The paper should include the following four required elements:
1. A discussion of the main causes or risk factors for the public health issue or challenge. In most cases, the risk factors will include both individual behaviors or traits, and community or societal conditions or policies. You may use epidemiological data (like differences in rates) to show that something is a risk factor. This section of your paper should be two to three paragraphs.
2. A controversy about how to prevent or address this public health issue, including evidence on both sides of the controversy. Explore the controversy first, then take a stand on one side or the other. Remember, a controversy is something about which reasonable people disagree -- for example, whether it works better to prevent diabetes through nutrition education or through taxing sweetened beverages; or whether the rights of adults to enjoy vaping are infringed upon when public health measures prohibit the sale of e-cigarettes in many locations. This section of your paper should be two to three paragraphs.
3. Your proposal for what should be done to prevent or address this public health issue, and why you think it's the best proposal. You may build your argument using examples of other successful policies or proposals (evidence!). In most cases, I would like to see an "upstream" approach (primary or secondary prevention). In some cases, you may be focused on a change to health policy regarding downstream treatment options -- if so, make sure that you are proposing a change to health policy at the societal level of the ecological model. This section of your paper should be two to three paragraphs.
4. Make sure you incorporate one or two of the following public health frameworks somewhere in your paper -- for example, use one of the frameworks when discussing risk factors/root causes, or the controversy, or your own proposal for prevention.
- the social determinants of health
- the upstream/downstream idea or the 3 levels of prevention (primary, secondary, tertiary)
- the ecological model or other multi-factor or multi-causation disease models
- the 4-step public health approach from the CDC
- the communicable disease model (or epidemiological triangle)
- a historical analysis of how this health problem arose over time
Please include an introductory paragraph (where you state your thesis or main idea) and a concluding paragraph. Write your paper in paragraphs that flow together smoothly -- not like a question-and-answer list.
Paper Length: 4 to 6 pages, double spaced.
