Critical Book Review
Students are to write a critical book review of Kristy Leissle''sbookCocoa. A critical book reviewdiffers from a book reportin that it requires the student to analyze the information and ideas presented in the book, rather than simply describe them. In this sense, "critical" refers not to a "critique" of the book, but to a thorough analysisand assessment of its content and arguments. In her book, Leissle argues that cocoa is political, but that the consumer often fails to see this. As such, the deep inequalities and injustices that are common to cocoa''s global supply chain frequently remain hidden. This assignment is intended to provide students with an opportunity to write a review that draws on the information and arguments presented in Cocoa in order to answer the following:
1) In what ways is cocoa political?
2) In what ways does the global cocoa industry maintain and foster deep inequalities while benefiting the few?
3) What needs to happen to bring justice to the global cocoa industry?
