Question: John is an alien currently living in the United Sates. A few years ago John was an elected official in his country's government. His political party was the only ruling party at the time, and the country was a military dictatorship that was allied with the United States. One day rebel troops ousted John's government, and he fled the country. John arrived in Canada by airplane, stayed briefly in Canada, and then entered the United States illegally on foot from the Canadian border. The rebel troops are still in power. John is seeking asylum.

Write a brief statement arguing your side you will argue that John should be granted asylum.
