Many question whether the jury model is the best model for justice or if juries have stopped serving a beneficial purpose. Research shows that jury members often are unable to understand and apply the complex nuances of the law. It also shows that jurors, when they do understand the law, often disregard it. And some argue who end up on a jury are generally ignorant. Some have suggested other options for the dispensation of justice. One is that a panel of judges hear trials and render verdicts. Another option is that professional jurors hear trials and render verdicts. These jurors would be trained in the law and impartiality, and paid for their work. What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of moving away from juries toward one of these two alternatives? Would making these changes undermine democracy?
