A healthy 40-year-old man was camping in a wooded area with his family when he discovered a tick imbedded on his left lower leg, approximately 2 inches above his lateral ankle. He was able to remove the tick using fine-tipped tweezers and thought nothing of it. Two days later, he noted that the bite area was about the size of a pencil eraser (5 millimeters) in diameter, raised, and reddened. After another two days, he goes to his primary care provider. The worst area of pain and the redness has quickly grown to about 3 inches in diameter, and his ankle and foot are warm and tender with edema and erythema extending to the pretibial area and the dorsum of his foot.
