One therapy for COVID-19 is called "plasma transfer". A patient (Joy) who has recovered from COVID-19 donates blood. Doctors carefully separate the plasma (liquid with antibodies) away from the red & white blood cells in Joy's blood. They then inject the plasma from Joy into a sick patient (Mary) to help them recover.
Based on what you have learned about the immune system and antibodies, answer the following questions.
a) Why would giving Mary antibodies from Joy help fight Mary's COVID-19 infection? Does this help before or after the virus has entered Mary's lungs cells? How could these antibodies slow down the infection in Mary's cells?
b) Is Joy (plasma donor) likely to have "secondary immunity"? Why or why not?
c) Is Mary (plasma receiver) likely to have "secondary immunity" after receiving the plasma? Why or why not?
