Objectives:

• to create examples of common perceptual tendencies
• to apply the perception-checking skill to specific situations by creating complete perception checks

Overview: 

In the initial post, we will be describing examples of times we have experienced common perceptual tendencies that our peers can use to practice perception-checking messages.

Then, in our responses, we will create perception checks for the situations posted by one of our peers as if we were the writer of the initial post back in their situation addressing the other person. 

Instructions for Initial Post (8 pts) - Due WEDNESDAY @ 11:59 pm

• Review the perception chapter of the book and particularly the sections on "Common Perceptual Tendencies"
• Reflect on a current or recent relationship and think of some times where minor but unnecessary misunderstandings occurred, where you made an assumption or misinterpreted the other person's words or behaviors due to the influence of one or more of the common perceptual tendencies.
• As you decide on an example for your post, choose a more minor misunderstanding. Your peer will be writing a perception check based on your example. Although perception checking is appropriate for many circumstances, for the purposes of the assignment avoid more intense, personal examples.

In your initial post:

1.  
   1. State the nature of your relationship (friend, sweetheart, boss, etc.) AND give a real or fake name
   2. Describe the context of the misunderstanding
   3. Describe what the other person did, said, or failed to do
   4. Explain how you interpreted their behavior and why the misunderstanding created confusion and/or created problems in the relationship
   5. Identify and explain which common perceptual tendency was affecting your inaccurate perception and put the label in bold font
