Problem

Passage: "Tactical or strategic passing-passing temporarily with a particular purpose in mind-was born out of a dogged desire for freedom. In later historical periods, this type of passing would allow racially ambiguous men and women to access employment opportunities, to travel without humiliation, and to attend elite colleges. In the antebellum period, passing was connected to a larger struggle and to strivings for freedom"(Hobbs 201).

I think this passage uses repetition effectively to get the point across about racial passing for slaves. They used it to escape slavery and to blend in so they wouldn't be questioned by white people and to live an easy life. The whole idea of this piece is to info readers about a run away slave who used his skin to pass as a white man for freedom because he couldn't live as a slave anymore. He wasn't the only slave to do this. A lot of slaves that were white passing did this and this passage makes it clear on what those slaves did and their reasoning behind it. I don't think the repetition in this passage has any clutter or any weakness to it. I think it's trying to make the idea very clear about why slaves escaped and passed as white people. Everything they did was for a reason and not being they just wanted to be white altogether. It was to survive in America and live a normal life sadly.
