Final Paper - Instructions
Your final paper will be an overview of historical, cultural, and literary contexts that help readers better understand the New Testament.
Many of the sources you need to include in your paper are a combination between Elwell and Yaborough text, Carter's Seven Events book, and, of course, the New Testament. Be careful not to make this a paper about a confessional statement of your beliefs or a criticism of religion but rather an accounting of what you have learned about the broader context of the New Testament itself. Any inclusion of the videos in the course material will also strengthen your paper.
Your paper will need to address the following ideas:
1. How does the Roman occupation of Judea get portrayed in the New Testament? Why do some Jews embrace it, while others resist it? Why is this important for understanding the cultural context of the New Testament? Explain with examples and details.
2. Why is crucifixion the chosen method for Jesus' execution? Contrast what crucifixion meant in Roman society versus what it meant to early Christians (cite Scripture in this portion of your paper)?
3. What are the different types/genres of documents that end up creating the New Testament? Choose an example of each and explain its importance.
4. Explain the process of the New Testament canon being closed.
5. Describe the three most important things you take away from your experience in this course. Please make sure you include something from the textbooks, videos, and the New Testament text itself.
