Questions: Based on your informed opinion and the facts below answer the following two questions.
1) Why has the social work profession adopted the duty to promote autonomy/self-determination as a cornerstone of professional practice instead of assuming a paternalistic orientation?
2) Identify how the duty to honor self-determination/autonomy differentiates social work from other professions (i.e. nursing, probation officers, law enforcement) with which social workers often collaborate.

Case Study: Autonomy is defined as self-determination, or the condition of being free from the control of others. Autonomy is the ability to make our own choices about what we want to do and why.

The Common Morality Framework guides us to allow rational people to make their own decisions. In practice, this means that social workers must still help people make safe choices, even when they personally disagree with their clients' decisions.
In Section 1.02: Self-Determination, the Code tells us that: "Social workers respect and promote the right of clients to self-determination and assist clients in their efforts to identify and clarify their goals.
"Social workers may limit clients' right to self-determination when, in the social worker's professional judgment, clients' actions or potential actions pose a serious foreseeable and imminent risk to themselves or others."
