Assignment
A core tenet of sociology is that our actions, behaviors, thoughts, attitudes, and life chances are not just of our own individual making; instead, we (and the things that we stand for) are largely the product of the social, political, historical, and economic contexts within which we are embedded. In other words, the social groups of which we are a part go a long way in making us who are as individual people. We have spent the last few weeks discussing the various elements of this process. For this assignment, I want you to consider how your own life history is not just a function of your unique decisions and actions, but also of sociological forces external to you.
Read the following prompts carefully:
A. What are some major macrolevel social, political, economic, and/or cultural events that have taken place during different stages of your life.
B. Reflect on some of the more microlevel events that you believe have shaped you as a person (this can be events or interactions that took place in your household, peer groups, sports teams, etc.).
C. How did the macrolevel and microlevel events you selected impact (or not impact) you at that point in time? Were there any lasting effects of these events on your life? If they did impact you in some way, why do you think that's the case? If they did not impact you, why do you think that is the case?
As you consider these events for your self-reflection essay you need to engage with some of the concepts covered in your readings within your write-up. Here are a few examples of questions you can consider to fully expand your reflection:
1. In what ways did the social context in which you were born and raised determine the roles you took on as a child and/or adult?
2. In what ways did economic or political forces impose role strain or role conflict on you or your family while growing up?
3. Were there any norms in your family that you followed and took for granted as something that every family does, but you now see were social constructions unique to your family?
4. Who had the power to define what those norms were? Get the instant assignment help.
5. In what ways did one or more of your ascribed statuses shape your life trajectory up to this point?
6. In what ways did the achieved statuses you acquired later in life alter or reinforce your life trajectory?
7. Do you think the collective memory of any of these events has changed over time?
8. Were any of these events examples of self-fulfilling prophecies?
