Part - Herbal Product Manufacturing

Task

Manufacture a cost-effective therapeutic herbal preparation, consisting of two (2) or more herbs for a general physical condition, as planned in Manufacturing Part A

Write a report of the research from peer-reviewed journals, along with summary of core information from traditional and modern texts, providing the rationale for the manufacturing process and the herbs used.

Include embedded photographs that clearly show the progressive stages of the manufacturing and the final labelled product.

Specific Assessment Details - Herbal Product
Therapeutic herbal products appropriate for this manufacturing project include: Cream or Lotion, Liniment or Rub, Ointment, Salve or Balm, Syrup or Glycetract, Lozenge, Pessary, Pill or Pastille
The herbal product is being manufactured for a general condition, or symptoms thereof, and may be for external or internal use
Herbs will be the primary source of the therapeutics of the finished product
The product will be manufactured from raw and readily available ingredients and consist of at least two (2) or more herbs.
You will make the baseline ingredients if possible, e.g., a cream made from infused oil, infusion and a tincture you have prepared, prior to making the finished product

Use more than two stages of manufacturing e.g., warm infused oil, cold infused oil, herb tincture made by maceration, compiling all ingredients with melting wax/copha to make ointment is four stages.

A herbal infusion/decoction or a tincture blend is not suitable as the finished product for this assessment

Present the finished herbal therapeutic product in an appropriate labelled container (this can be repurposed). Essential oils may be used as adjunct ingredients but will not be the core therapeutic constituent.

The baseline products may be sourced from anywhere e.g., your pantry, garden, the local farmers market or supermarket or the local health food store.

It is anticipated that the finished product itself will cost less than $15, although the overall outlay may be more.

Manufacturing Report Framework
Use at least ten (10) academic sources overall including four (4) scientific journals, two (2) traditional herbal texts, and two (2) current herbal textbooks. Frame the academic discussions from your research with the headings below:

Photos of manufacturing process. The embedded pictures will be used to assess the visual quality of product, and the various processes involved in making it. One photograph must show the final product in its labelled container and the contents.

One photograph must include your student card (or other photo ID) alongside your product for authentication/identification purposes

Introduction: [Do this last to encompass the entire report]

What is the purpose of the report?

Introduce the intended product and what the product will be used for

Introduce what herbs are being used, their relevant therapeutic actions, in what form the herbs are utilized and the expected therapeutic outcome

Provide the general outline for each section of the manufacturing report Summary from Manufacturing Part A:

Explain core common therapeutic factors between pharmaceutical and herbal products for condition/symptoms

Provide rationale (core facts) of why the two herbs (or more) were initially selected for use in the product, based upon the previous research from traditional and modern herbal texts, relative to the condition/symptoms
State any changes from the original plan, e.g., herbs or formulation, and explain why

Further Evidence of the Herbal Ingredients: [research current clinical/scientific peer-reviewed journals for the evidence, at least two journals per herb]

For each of the herbs used in the product, discuss the current clinical/scientific evidence. Identify what type of trials/research the information comes from, and the findings regarding the herbs' therapeutic actions, efficacy and methods for treating the condition/symptoms

Identify, for each herb, which active constituent groups have been extracted through the initial processing and explain how these are therapeutic for the condition/symptoms being treated

Discuss the link/s between the traditional and modern texts and the current research, and how this provides an evidence base for the formulation of your product

Discuss specific advantages and disadvantages of the herbs and product type in relation to the condition/symptoms as noted in the scientific/clinical journals

Explain how the evidence has influenced your final herb/s and product selection, and any other factors involved in that decision
Manufacturing Process:

Embed labelled photos of all stages of the preparation and manufacturing process within the written report alongside the written content.

Explain the preparatory processes for all herbs, including Quality Assurance, the methods of extraction, drug extract ratios (DER) and starting/finishing amounts of base materials that you have prepared for use in the product.

State the formulation (recipe), inclusive of amounts and methods used to make the product Explain the manufacturing processes utilised, inclusive of Good Manufacturing Practise

State how the dosage of the product has been determined. Compare this to two modern texts, determining if the finish product contains sufficient extracted/processed herbal material to be therapeutically effective. Provide a detailed costing breakdown showing manufacturing costs for the batch and unit. Compare this to the herbal products from the market research in part A.

Discuss whether the herbal therapeutic product is cost-effective Labelling:

Include graphics of two labels for your product that you have designed (criteria as per the TGA).

One label will be for an over-the-counter (OTC) product, the other for an extemporaneously dispensed product. Insert the graphics of the herbal product labels into the report

Discuss the label differences from a consumer perspective Reflective Conclusion:

Provide an evaluation of the information and ingredient gathering process. Explain any difficulties from planning through to the manufacturing of the product.

Identify what you have learned in this process, what worked and what didn't. State what could be done differently next time.

Discuss how you could utilise the finished product in a dispensary, or would it be more suitable as OTC.
