Assignment:

Identify which fallacy patterns are illustrated in the following arguments. Give a sentence explanation of your decision.

1) My opponent believes in the theory of evolution which states that humans are descendants of monkeys. Maybe he thinks we should behave more like monkeys too. Males should fight to the death for the right to mate a female. And when we get angry we should throw fecal matter at each other.

2) If we vote to allow gay marriage, then next year we'll be voting to allow adults to marry children, then humans to marry animals. We've got to stop the madness!

3) I'm not sure I can believe Dr. Einstein's theory of relativity. He's divorced.

4) My pharmacist suggested I buy a decongestant and a cough suppressant for my cold. I don't agree. Pharmacists mission is life is to keep us drugged up!

5) The Supreme Court decision outlawing a simple moment of silence for prayer in public schools is scandalous. Evidently, the ACLU and other radical groups will not be satisfied until every last man, woman, and child in the country is an atheist.

6) The new MacBook has the fastest processor of any computer. At the store, it loaded web pages much faster than a 2013 Dell computer.

7) My minister says that genetic engineering is not all safe. Therefore all experimentation in this field should stop.

8) Parker says Macs are better than PCs, but what do you expect a nerd to say?

9) Food portions are an important part of healthy eating because the amount you eat impacts your overall health.

10) Many are calling for the U.S. to end the colonization of Puerto Rico. That would be a shame because it is a beautiful island and a wonderful place to go on vacation.

11) "We've got to stop them from banning pornography. Once they start banning one form of literature, they will never stop. Next thing you know, they will be burning all the books!"

12) Either we fire this guy or we send a message to other employees that it is okay to be late to work.

13) Interviewer: "Your resume looks impressive but I need another reference."

Bill: "Jill can give me a good reference."

Interviewer: "Good. But how do I know that Jill is trustworthy?"

Bill: "Certainly. I can vouch for her."

14) If today you can make teaching creationism in public schools a crime, then tomorrow you can make it a crime to teach it in private schools. Then you can ban books and other educational material that mention creationism. And then you can ban the very word from all discourse. And then the anti-religion bigots will have won.

15) Either the United States attacks N. Korea or we continue to allow their president to rule our lives.

16) The Peloton bike promises to get me in better shape. The people using it in the commercial are very muscular and fit.

17) Dr. Phil recommends vitamin C with every meal. Since he is a doctor, this is probably good advice.

18) My HUM 115 instructor is in favor of more funding for community colleges. He would say that. He works for them!

19) I'm going to do better next semester. After all, it's a new year.

20) "Look, you are going to have to make up your mind. Either you decide that you can afford this stereo, or you decide to drive without music."
