Problem
For this problem, you will select one article from a scholarly Disability or Disability Studies journal. The word disability or disability studies must appear in the title of the journal (e.g., Disability Studies Quarterly, Disability and Society). You can select an article based on your own interest (browse the journal volumes and titles) or you can direct your focus to a particular topic (cognitive disability, relationships, work, health). Given that disability studies is an emerging area of research and work, articles from around 1994 to the present day may be relevant. Look for something that interests you and review a few abstracts as part of your selection. You may not choose a reading that is already on the course list of readings. Next, you will summarize the article briefly. Use in-text citations where necessary. It is important that you quickly get to the main point of this problem, which is the description of the theory that the author is invoking and mobilizing. Your problem will be evaluated as a whole based on an assessment of the following elements:
I. Summary of the main focus of the selected journal (selection and summary/relevance for broad disability issues)
II. Summary of the main points of the selected article (selection and summary/relevance for broad disability issues)
III. Description of the main problem and concepts taken up in the article (poverty, disability, or stigma for example) that the author draws attention to and where these emerge or show up (e.g., in the everyday lives of people with disabilities, in media and culture, in power relations such as hospitals, schools and institutions). In addition, you must ensure you are coherent, clear, and concise.
IV. Discussion of the theoretical lens that the author proposes (see example of article, theory, and method below). In addition, you must be clear in communicating this and demonstrate expressed interest and relevance for broad disability issues.
V. Final thoughts addressing what the article adds and where it might lead, as well as any limitations or strengths you see. Ensure your work is clear and concise, and that you are demonstrating expressed interest and relevance to article and your own previous discussion.
