Toughness is proportional to the amount of energy stored/put in to a material (or structure) when a stress is applied. Compact bone from the tibia has a tensile failure stress of 150 MPa and a tensile strain at failure of 1.5%. The anterior collateral ligament has a tensile failure stress of 35 MPa and a strain at failure of 30%. Which is probably mechanically tougher, the bone or the ligament? We calculated Young's Modulus for each but aren't sure of how to relate Youngs Modulus to Toughness.
large cylindrical bales of hay used to feed livestock in the winter months are d2m in diameter and are stored
estimate the theoretical fracture strength of a brittle material if it is known that fracture occurs by the propagation
What is the total force reaction (magnitude) at pin joint O when the square plate is released from rest? Assume the plate has a uniform thickness.
What are the percentages of the total heat absorption taking place in the economizer, boiler drum and the superheater, respectively? Assume cp of air and water as 1.005 kJ/kg K and 4.2 kJ/kg K, respectively.
the frame ACD is supported by a ball-and-socket joint at A and D and by a cable which passes through a ring at B and is attached to hooks at G and H. Knowing that the frame supports at point C a load of magnitude P=268N, determine the tension in t..
a cylindrical rod of steel e 30 x 106 psihaving a yield strength of 45000nbsppsi is to be subjected to a load of 2500
Is there an economic case for renewable energy? This issue was recently a "hot topic" in the news, and you are referred to the following newspaper article for a representation from the media.
Using a centrifugal pump, and a flow rate of 60 gal/min, calculate the break hp of the pump using water with a density of 62.4lbm/ft3 and do the same for a nonviscous liquid having a density of 0.85g/cm3.
A cooking pan whose inner diameter is 20 cm is filled with water and covered with a 4-kg lid. If the local atmospheric pressure is 101 kPa, determine the temperature at which the water starts boiling when it is heated.
water contained in a closed, rigid tank, initially saturated vapor at 200C, is cooled to 100C. determine the initial and final pressure, each in bar. locate the initial and final states on a sketches of the p-v and T-v digrams.
an insulated rigid tank initially contains 1.8 ibm of helium at 82 f and 45 psia. a paddle wheel with a power rating of
